Mind responds to CPI figures showing inflation at 10.1%

Wednesday, 19 October 2022 Mind

Today, Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures from the Office for National Statistics showed inflation rising to 10.1%. This figure is usually what informs the annual increase in benefits. In the last month, the UK government have suggested this may not be the case, despite a previous promise that they would increase benefits in line with inflation.

Mind has launched a petition calling on the UK government to commit to raising benefits in line with inflation, receiving over 12,000 signatures.

Vicki Nash, Associate Director of Policy, Campaigns and Public Affairs at Mind, said:

“This morning’s news of double-digit inflation will be a cause of worry for millions of households across the country, but particularly for those on the lowest incomes.

“It's not just the financial markets that need reassurance, those of us who rely on benefits to survive really need it too. This is why it’s absolutely essential the UK government increases benefits at least in line with inflation and for that increase to be brought forward to as soon as possible. Without an inflation-level increase in benefits, the coming winter and the months beyond will be a terrifying prospect for many people as their already stretched incomes dwindle even further.”
